High School Athletics

We offer a variety of sports for students in grades 9-12.

The athletic teams at STEM are coached by staff at STEM. Our teams give our students the opportunity to learn teamwork, safe competition and life-changing skills. See below for more information on our teams, fees, policies and more.

Athletics News

Player Eligibility

  • Students must maintain a “C” in all core classes to be eligible to play in games or participate in practice. Please note that no refunds will be given for a player’s inability to maintain the grade average over the course of the season.
  • Weekly grade checks are required for all players and it is the player’s responsibility to turn in a grade-check form each week. This requires the student to print, fill out, get teacher signatures and return to his/her coach every Wednesday.
  • Students may only participate in one sport per season.

Varsity Lettering Requirements

To be eligible for lettering in athletics at STEM, athletes must meet all general requirements outlined below. However, the final decision as to whether a student receives a varsity letter is ultimately up to the coaching staff.

  • First year on varsity team, the athlete will receive a letter (a large shield patch) and a sport-specific pin.
  • Second – fourth year on a varsity team, the athlete will receive a sports specific pin.
  • Players must maintain a GPA of 2.0 or above for the entirety of the season to be eligible.
  • Student must attend and participate in a minimum of 80% of practices and games; exceptions will be made for illness or injury with a doctor’s note.

PE Waiver for Athletes

Our student-athletes have the option to waive the PE requirement by completing a season with one of the athletics teams. Please download, read, and complete a form (can be obtained from the HS athletic director) if you are interested in taking advantage of this opportunity. Students may utilize this waiver policy to satisfy the Physical Education requirement, but will not earn any academic credit. Students are still required to complete a minimum of 24 credits to graduate.

Transportation

Unfortunately STEM is unable to currently offer transportation to games or practices. Also, due to the liability, coaches are not able to drive players to games or practice, regardless of the situation.

Players must be able to provide their own on-time transportation to games and practices. Failure to do so will result in a warning. On the second occurrence, the player will be removed from the team for the remainder of the season.

Cancellations and Announcements

All announcements and cancellations will be posted on the school’s athletic home page. We will also update the school calendar and/or the individual team’s TeamSnap page.

Practice and Game Participation

All missed practices must be excused by the parent or guardian and communicated to the coach.

It is a STEM Athletics policy that to be eligible for game day participation, students must attend at least 80% of practices, regardless of excused absences; exceptions may include sickness, injury or other such personal emergencies.

Participation Numbers

STEM never wants to keep a player from participating in a sport of their choice, either at STEM or at an alternate school. As such, STEM requires a minimum number of participants for each sport to ensure a full and competitive team.

Failure to reach participation numbers at the start of the season will result in cancellation of season so that players may choose to try out for an alternative team.

The following are the forms required to participate in a sport. All registration and forms will be completed through Sports Engine, except for the Physical Form. The physical form must be completed and turned in to the high school office.

  • CHSAA Physical Form– ONLY NEEDS TO BE COMPLETED ONCE PER CALENDAR YEAR. A paper form that must be printed, completed, and filled out BY A DOCTOR in conjunction with a physical. This can be turned in at the HS front office.
  • All forms and fees are required to be signed and turned in to the athletic director prior to participation. Physical and doctors’ forms need only be turned in once a year.
  • All payments will be done through Sports Engine. Players must complete the registration process each season and pay all fees online.
  • Financial aid/scholarships are available for those who qualify. Please contact the high school athletic director for more information.
  • Included in participation fees are coaches’ stipend; uniform (players must provide their own protective equipment, socks, and shoes); field/court rental; officials fees; equipment; end of season banquet; first aid essentials; scorekeeping books, coaches’ first aid and CPR training.

STEP I: Your coach is the number one and first contact for all things; should matters not be resolved, you may go to step II.

STEP II: Please contact the school’s athletic director by email and please copy the coach on the email.
